What Is Car Insurance?

Insurance is a contract between you and an insurance company. The insurer will help you recover financially from covered scenarios that involve bad things happening to or caused by your car. Bad things can range from medical expenses to towing.

Do I Need Car Insurance?

In almost every state, it’s illegal to drive without car insurance. Each state has a minimum liability

coverage that is legally required. If you don’t have it, you could be fined. If you consistently get

caught without it, you could end up in jail. Another good reason to have car insurance is consistency.

It’s easier to pay monthly or quarterly premiums than to swallow the sudden cost of a bad accident. Unless

you have a giant pile of emergency cash lying around, you should get yourself an insurance policy.

What Does Car Insurance Cover?

Car insurance can cover your car, other people’s cars, people inside the cars and the people around the

cars (pedestrians, bikers, ect.). It all depends on the type of coverage you have to determine what is or

is not covered.

The three main auto insurance coverage types are liability, collision and comprehensive. There are a number of specialized options also available.

  • Liability: covers medical expenses up to your policy limit. If you are at fault in an accident, this also covers the other driver’s medical expenses and car repairs. It does not cover repairs to your own vehicle.

  • Collision: This covers the cost of repairs to your car in case of a collision with another vehicle or other objects.

  • Comprehensive: This covers fire, wild animal collisions, vandalism, theft and glass. It’s frequently called other than collision.

  • Uninsured/Underinsured motorist: This covers medical or repair expenses that are more expensive than what the other person’s insurance covers. For example, if they’re driving uninsured, which is illegal, or if they carry low liability limits.

  • Medical payments: This covers medical bills that go over what your liability insurance covers. If you don’t have health insurance, this is especially important.

  • Rental car: This covers rental car costs while your car is being repaired after a covered loss up to your listed limit.

  • Road service/Roadside assistance: This can cover emergency tows, battery jump starts and other roadside incidents.

Here are some of the most common discounts that insurance companies offer:

  • Multi-policy: Discount for bundling insurance policies with one company.

  • Multi-car: Discount for insuring more than one car on the same policy.

  • Safety options: Discount for your car’s safety features such as air bags or anti lock brakes.

  • Accident-free: Discount if you’ve gone a long time without an accident

  • Loyalty: Discounts available if you’ve been at your insurance company for a long time

  • Age: Discount if you’re over a certain age, usually 25 or under 75.
